Excerpt from "The Raft."

An explosion slammed us both to the deck. The cabin sole tilted skyward.

Screams and shattering glass filled the darkness, punctuated by smoky flashes of light.
The blast tossed me across the compartment like a bit of driftwood. Screams added to
the confusion. A hand clawed at my leg, trying to climb up the sloping surface. I
reached down, clasped it and pulled Melanie onto my chest.

She was breathing hard, and bleeding from a gash on her forehead.

“Jamie,” she said. “I must get—”

“No,” I said, hoping that she understood the rest of my unspoken plea. Jamie
would never forgive me if I let Melanie get hurt. I pulled her to the door, even as she
strained against me, searching the gloom and chaos for her husband. Another body
slammed against us.

“Help me get her to the life boat,” I called. Theo grasped Melanie and I followed
them out into the storm.

The captain’s deck was nearly underwater. Flames shot up from the cabin.
Melanie still shrieked for Jamie. Theo thrust her to me and lowered a life boat into the
water.

“Get her into the boat,” he said over the storm. “I’m going to get the others.”

Melanie was hysterical now, and blood flowed from her head.

“Get in the boat,” I yelled, but she resisted, still trying to get away from me, to run
back inside and find Jamie.

“In the boat.” And, God help me, I pushed her. She fell forever. Her arms
flailed, and her mouth opened in a mockery of a scream. Her eyes—well, I will never
forget the look in her eyes.
